Scariest Setting Assignment

The Scariest Setting Assignment where we wrote a short story. We had to write a short story relying mostly on descriptive words to set the tone. The assignment was presented on Halloween, for that class the lights were off leaving our only source of light from a few candles. We took turns going up to the lectern and presenting our stories.

Pre-existing skills I was able to bring with me into this assignment were my writing and public speaking skills. This assignment had multiple parts to it as we had to plan, finalize, then finally present. I really like to do creative writing and novel writing in my free time so this assignment was a fun break from the more expository writing I do in English normally. I can do free-writing/story writing fairly well but I’m not the strongest at doing essay writing or other writing like that. In addition I also am comfortable with public speaking so I feel I had clear delivery when presenting my project.

Challenges I faced were starting the assignment. First I didn’t have an idea so I had four story openings because I kept making them because I didn’t like them. And then once I got an idea I couldn’t execute it in a way that satisfied me. I had restarted my introduction so many times I ended up only having an introduction at the point where other students had their whole rough story draft. Once I had an introduction that I liked I managed to write the whole rest of the story in one class because it all finally flowed together.
