Digital Footprint Assignment

1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

A digital footprint can impact your future in many ways. One example would be if you were applying for a job and your employer finds out that you had posted an offensive comment/post. Even if you had a perfect resume, you would probably not be considered for the job anymore because of that. However, if you had a good reputation online, your employer would be more compelled to hire you even if your resume had some faults.

2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

My first tip on being safe on the internet would be to not post anything personal about yourself. Some examples could be your address, your name, or anything someone could track you with. Another tip would be to never post any sensitive information online such as your card number, bank name, or social security number. My last tip would be to change your profile settings to private so that strangers can’t contact or see you.

3. If you could go back in time, is there anything you would do differently online? Think of what type of advice you would pass on to your younger self or other students. How could you go about explaining it to them

If I could go back in time, I would definitely do things differently online. One example would be to change my profile settings to private so that only my friends and family could have seen my profile. I would also not comment on some things that I now see were offensive and could have hurt someone’s feelings. The advise I would give to someone younger would be to treat others how you would want to be treated online and that you could easily hurt someone’s feelings so if you have even the smallest doubt that something you want to post could hurt someone, you should keep it to yourself.
