Principle / Concept: Success is 87% People Knowledge and 13% Product Knowledge (according to researchers at Stanford University)

Meaning: To be successful you can’t just say “This house is the newest model, it’s flashy and expensive.” You have to reach out to your customers to find out what they like and try to help them find what best suits them. While doing this you can change your approach from “This house is the newest model, it’s flashy and expensive.” to “What kind of house are you looking for, do you have kids? What age are they? Are they in school?” Try to get their interest let them know that you want to listen and want to help them get the best value for their home.

Importance: Take a second to reflect on the principle, almost 90% of your ultimate success is not determined by what you know, but how you can relate what you know with the people you want to influence. So let the people you are working with or the people you are selling to be your top priority. This means when your meeting with your clients whether it be in person, or through technology such as Zoom or Teams, gives them your undivided attention. Let them know that you care and want what’s best for them.

How I’m going to implement this in my life: I am going to try my best to use this principle. A step I will take in the future is to always ask people how I can help them and if I’m asking for a favour or help I’ll be sure to return it and to ask If I can help them first.

Equipping

Principle / Concept: The Law of Mt. Everest “As the challenge escalates, the need for teamwork elevates.”

Meaning: The Law of Mt. Everest is “As the challenge escalates, the need for teamwork elevates.” Meaning, the more a team works together, the more they can achieve. As said in the session by John C. Maxwell, this law is about gathering and growing a team to accomplish something big.

Importance: The reason I chose this principle was because I know that most very successful people only became successful because of how well they worked with their teams. Together. It’s almost impossible to become successful by one’s self, they can’t get anywhere close to as successful as others working together. A team can accomplish more than a person, but it’s important that the team itself also has excellent teamwork, communication, and a shared dream. As a team, we can accomplish so much more. As we’ve seen throughout the year in leadership classes planning our hikes, and in planning out cultural event trips.

How I’m going to implement this in my life: The Law of Mount Everest is fundamental in all aspects of life. As much teamwork is very important, asking for help is as well. In a way, they are very similar. So in the future, I will ask to try my hardest to take opportunities to work as a team with others.

Attitude

Principle / Concept: Our attitude determines our approach to life.

Meaning: The way we act is a direct outcome of our attitudes. A negative attitude can create a bias towards your approach to life, making you say no to great opportunities or things you would think were fun otherwise. With a negative bias or attitude, you can’t make decisions and become easily irritated or annoyed causing you to push people away and ruin your relationships.

Importance: To me, attitudes play a big part in life. Attitudes can positively or negatively affect a person’s behaviour and approach to how they see things. A person may not always be aware of their attitude or the effect it is having on their life. A person who has a positive attitude towards work, school and overall life can positively influence and affect those around them. These positive attitudes are usually shown in a person’s behaviour, people with a good attitude are active and productive and do what they can to improve themselves and those around them.

How I’m going to implement this in my life: A step I’m going to take in the future is to always try to keep my attitude positive, keep a smile on my face, and try to take things in with a positive approach. I know that my attitude is my choice and that if I keep a positive attitude then I will be able to lead those around me in the best way possible.

Leadership

Principle / Concept: The law of the Lid. Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness.

Meaning: The law says that the higher someone’s leadership ability the more effectiveness they can have. Thie concept is an analogy saying that your Leadership ability is like a roof or a lid that caps your level of effectiveness. Meaning if the better the person leads the more effective their team and they will work.

Importance: The reason I chose this principle is because I think it is very important and that it is something that we can all improve on. If we improve our ability to lead then we can also improve our effectiveness as a team to get our tasks done ahead. A good example of this was during the planning of our hiking trips this year. Some of the groups had good leaders step up to help delegate tasks and help us further understand what we needed to do. This made the planning a lot more efficient as we had good leaders to help us.

How I’m going to implement this in my life: I am going to take as many opportunities as I can to be a good leader, whether it’s stepping up to lead a warmup for my volleyball team or volunteering to do the job that others didn’t want. The more leadership opportunities I take the more experience and skill I will obtain making my Lid higher and allowing me to be more effective in and out of the classroom.

In conclusion, hopefully, if I can follow these principles and concepts I will become a great leader and a real success.

Thank you for reading and I hope you consider following these steps too – Justin
