What is a Portfolio?

A portfolio is meant to be a representation of you. It’s essentially a very done-up visual resume. It’s meant to display how you express yourself, while showcasing your technical ability. Portfolios are made up of multiple pieces of artwork that show your skill and a part of who you are as a person, after all, we often create for ourselves more than we do for our audience. It is meant to give your art school(s) of choice and future employers a glimpse into your artistic skill and technical ability to see if you would be a good fit for them.

Why bother with a Portfolio?

A portfolio is often a requirement by many institutes and corporations. It lets admission officers and employers know where your skill level is at and often determines whether they want to work with you or not. If you are looking to pursue a career in the creative industry, then a portfolio is necessary, as it is a record of all the artwork you’ve created or contributed to.

What makes a ‘good’ Portfolio?

A ‘good’ portfolio is made up of a variety of concepts and medium exploration. That is what often makes a strong, leading portfolio. It shows that you are flexible with the mediums you use, while discussing a wide range of topics. When scouting out for potential artists, a portfolio that is diverse in its contents is smiled upon and is labelled as ‘good’ when really, it’s a strong one, because being able to diversify your work and offer versatility in your creative process allows you to fit the needs of your employers in a more effective way.
