In-Depth

For In-Depth I will be working on creating, learning and performing poi. Poi is a form of juggling that looks similar to club swinging. Poi has three main parts, a handle, a ball (can also be a beanbag) and a rope or string to connect the two. I will be making three pairs of different types of poi myself. One pair will be contact poi, which have a ball on one end and a knob handle with a connecting rope. Then I will make traditional poi, which I will make using a rope and a cloth(or similar material) filled with something to add weight. For the last set of poi, I will use nylon to make a tail and holder for a tennis ball. Then I will attach a string and two finger handle to the tennis ball.

I plan to make with choreograph and perform a performance as part of my end project presentation. I have already planned a few performances for juggling before, but I didn’t have as much time to practice each performance.  Since we have five months to work on in-depth, I will be practicing frequently and learning many skills, so that I can perform at the end of the project.

I’ve already contacted and met up with my mentor, who is a friend of my parents. His name is Damian Trasler. During that hour-long meeting at my mentor’s house I learned a few of the basic skills with poi and he taught me a bit of the history of Poi. I found out that they were originally from New Zealand. Even the basic skills he taught already look really cool and I’m excited to learn more each week.

I’m really excited to learn more about poi and how it works. I’ve always enjoyed doing projects like In-Depth, so I think I will enjoy this one too!
