“If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint” – Edward Hopper
For this year’s in-depth project, I decided to choose something out of my comfort zone and try something new – watercolor painting. From a young age, I was always fascinated by the idea of how you could express yourself by merely painting on a blank canvas, but I never got the chance to pursue that dream. The closest I ever got was a short, two-month 3D drawing class that went by too way too quickly. From then on, I kind of let go of that dream and forgot about what I was once so interested in, until now. Currently, I do not know anything about watercolor painting, but I hope to develop the skills and techniques throughout my in-depth project.
Some of my goals for in-depth are to recreate some of the most famous watercolor paintings such as the “Great Yarmouth Harbour, Norfolk” by J.M.W Turner, and the “Bideford” by Frank Webb. I also hope to acquire new skills and techniques such as bleeding colors and splattering that will help me develop into a better painter that I hope to become.
I have not yet acquired a mentor, but I hope to follow Jazmine’s and Simran’s footsteps and volunteer at Place des Arts in return for briefs mentoring sessions. Because of my other extracurriculars, I hope to meet my mentor every second week of Thursday or Friday, depending on my mentor’s schedule.
In the meantime, I am figuring out what basic supplies I will need and I am trying to learn the basic skills of watercolor painting to give myself an extra “boost” in my learning. I am very excited to go on this long but fast pace journey with the rest of my peers and I hope to bloom into a passionate painter that I once dreamed of becoming.
