Digital Literacy

Residential Schools Presentation

For this project, we were instructed to research a certain subject of the First Nation’s given to us by Mr. Morris in quads; my group was assigned the topic residential schools. After we had presented research on the topic, covering some background information, we had to find two articles relating to the topic and then ask a thought-provoking question at the end of the presentation for the rest of the class to answer in a discussion. The learning objectives for this presentation were learning how to research effectively, learning how to ask open ended questions, and learning how to present information engagingly.

Communication and Collaboration

  1. I use digital spaces to plan and execute collaborative projects with my peers

My group members and I used the sharing system on Office 365 to share and work with each other on this assignment from home. We had a PowerPoint and a Word document that we were all able to edit and this assisted in allowing us to collaborate.

Creativity, Innovation, Technology Operations and Concepts

  1. I determine and use the most effective medium to present my work

For this assignment specifically, it was most convenient and effective to use a PowerPoint presentation. All the other students in the class also used this medium to present their research and learning and it was the best way to have a visual while presenting with the least amount of hassle.

Research and Information Literacy

  1. I go beyond google and use databases to find scholarly research sources

To find research on the residential schools, we not only used Google, but also the archives provided to us by the school itself. Mr. Morris showed us how to access these archives and we used the links from there to gather news articles, images, and videos.

Liver Fluke Info-graphic

For this assignment, we were all given a specific micro-organism to research and were tasked with answering a handful of questions about this micro-organism specifically surrounding their reproduction system. The learning objectives for this assignment were learning researching skills and creating product that included images as well as writing.

Communication and Collaboration

  1. I tailor my work to appeal to my intended audience, and use language and visual design elements appropriate for them

Because this was an info-graphic the visual and organizational aspect of this was important. I used images appropriately to demonstrate my points in the info-graphic. A small table was even used when comparing some points on the info-graphic, adding another layer of visuals. The T-Chart was a good way to compare and contrast information. The language was simplified as well and scientific words were defined as most of us aren’t scientists and this fit the age group.

Creativity, Innovation, Technology Operations and Concepts

  1. I design my work with consideration given to aesthetics and design, such as consistent colour schemes, symmetry or organization of visual elements, and overall layout

The aesthetic was simple and so was the design. As for symmetry, I made sure the images alternated sides of the page so that the eyes followed the flow of the info-graphic which added to the overall look of the info-graphic. The black and white images add to a slight bit of professionalism and cohesiveness when it came to the final visual.

Digital Citizenship

  1. I attribute credit to ideas that are not my own by preparing a Bibliography/Works Cited and by using in-text citation

All the images I used and the research resources were cited at the bottom of the info-graphic, giving rightful credit to the people who provided my information.

A Midsummer Night’s dream Script

For this project, we had to take an act from the Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and adapt a script to present to the class. We could adjust the setting of the original and the general information about the characters, but overall had to keep the key story points the same. Our lines had to be memorized and we dressed up in corresponding outfits to our characters. The learning objectives of this is learning how to manage our time, as we had a lot of work blocks, learning how to do public speaking, and learning how to represent out learning.

Communication and Collaboration

  1. I respond to the work or ideas of my peers in a way that is compassionate and productive

At the start of the planning process, there was a lot of brainstorming to come up with a creative and good idea. Due to the amount of different ideas, to combat argument, we made a list of potential good ideas for our script and wrote them down in a collaborative Word document. This was the most productive way to respond to the ideas our group members had.

  1. I constructively build upon or synthesize the ideas of my peers

After we made this list, we could continue to build on it and add more ideas. We originally wanted to do a mafia or some sort of criminal/law enforcement type of theme, and some people suggested that instead we do a biker gang since in the move we had watched they had included bikes. This building of ideas led us to the biker gang. This was also apparent when writing the script. Someone would say a line out loud and everyone would give some criticism on how it could be improved. We also proofread each other’s work.

Stephen King Eminent Person Introductory Blog Post

This assignment was a blog post introducing our eminent person and represents the entire eminent unit. Eminent was an inquiry we did on a person we found has made an impact in a certain field of work or topic. After this blog post we had to create a speech and a learning center. This blog post was to introduce our eminent person and their achievements, showing what they have achieved and what hardships they had to overcome. The eminent speech gave a small summary of their life, achievements, and challenges. The learning objectives for this assignment were learning how to represent information, learning how to utilize public speaking, learning how to make an engaging presentation, learning how to research effectively, and learning how to use time management skills as we had many work blocks.

Communication and Collaboration

  1. I tailor my work to appeal to my intended audience, and use language and visual design elements appropriate for them

The blog post I presented had visual images and the language was simple but intellectual for the age group. The design was simple; in my post there weren’t any over the top images or colors. It was a simple lay out with organized paragraphs and images that stood out because of their placement within the post.

Creativity, Innovation, Technology Operations and Concepts

  1. I design my work with consideration given to aesthetics and design, such as consistent colou rschemes, symmetry or organization of visual elements, and overall layout

I organized my post so that the images fell in the middle of the post, perfectly center under the relating paragraph. The paragraphs were organized by topic and didn’t bunch into a wall of text, which caused ease on the eye for the overall layout.

  1. I challenge myself to increase my technological literacy by working with apps, software, or mediums that I have not used in the past

This blog post was one of my earlier experiences working with this sort of blogging app. I’ve used social medias that could also be considered as “blogs”, but I’ve never had experience this extensively with using a posting website. So, this was a bit of getting used to and slightly challenging, but I’ve now grown accustom to it.

Digital Citizenship

  1. I ethically use content that is not created by me by using Creative-Commons licensed audio, video, or images and by properly citing these resources within my work

Below each image on my post I cite the source and at the bottom of the post I cite the resources where I received information about my eminent person.

  1. My work demonstrates a positive, productive, and empathetic worldview

The post has an overall positive outlook on my eminent person. Although I do cover some hardships that he had, I am mostly focused on his achievements and successes to show why he was such an amazing person. This displays the positive outlook I have on his overall career and even the world. At the end of the post I explain I am excited to also learn about his craft which further shows the positivity.
