What went particularly well during your mentoring sessions?

Our sessions were efficient, and we’re both somewhat extroverted so there was no period of awkwardness, we went straight to business. We established a good basis for our relationship, staying friendly while still being formal and on task. She was very outgoing and understanding towards me, and she was very supportive of what I’m trying to accomplish. I explained everything that would be asked of her for the project, and told her how we would need to meet about every two weeks, sometimes more or less depending on what part of the project I’m working on.

Were you communicating effectively with one another?

We communicated well though text up to when we meet, and we each talked about the same amount, and figured out what we needed to do and how we wanted to do it. She lives quite close by, and she works at city hall so I can sky train there quite quickly if there’s anything I need from her, as long as I let her know more than 3 days in advance. Even though she is around my parents’ age, we had no problem talking to each other, and we communicate with each other through text for planning meetings and discussing small tips or suggestions that don’t need her to be talking to me in person.

What factors affected your ability to interact effectively?

She is a city Councillor, and she also volunteers a lot and her kids have sports and other activities, so she is quite busy all the time. She still makes time for mentoring me, however, I just have to be conscious of if my inquiries really require her direct assistance. Right now, I am currently in the process of writing the speech, so her help is not required until I finish. We don’t really have a designated meeting spot, which may make it harder to meet quickly, but there are a couple places, such as city hall, the school, or my house where we can meet.
