Come one, come all, to In-depth Night 2021. Don’t let the presence of an international pandemic fool you, us TALONS kids still have quite a line up of projects, this one being no exception. Especially in my partner in volleyball, Gyu Min Jang, and I’s case, we really put a lot of time and effort into this years project, and got some really solid results. Without further ado, my final In-depth Blog post of… well, ever.
Now, who am I? Well, if you are (tragically) unaware, my name is Devon Brooks and I am a Grade 10 TALONS learner this year! I chose to do Volleyball for In-depth with my friend Gyu Min Jang. I hope you enjoy the fruits of our labours.
Picture this. It’s the middle of Quarantine, and you literally can’t do anything. The world feels like it’s on standby, and me, a 15 year old boy at the time, is stuck to his own devices. Spending the days going from one new hobby to the next, I was yearning for, believe it or not, something to do besides be a couch potato. As it turns out, I happened to be watching a popular anime during quarantine, among doing many other activities, that my good friend Gyu Min Jang also happened to watch, called “Haikyuu!!”.
With my mother already pressuring me to join volleyball for nearly my entire life, plus this really cool show, and the school volleyball club opening up once school started, I saw my chance and took it. I will never regret taking the opportunity, because I had an absolute blast with some really cool people. Volleyball Club ran until winter break, where it sadly had to end. Determined not to let his Volleyball experience die with the end of the club, Gyu Min proposed that we continue in the form of In-depth 2021, in a joint In-depth project with him and our mentor/math teacher/volleyball coach, Mr. Salisbury, how could I say no?
After around 5 months of hard work and practices, this is the fruits of our labours.
Thank you for watching!! If you have any questions, or, well, comments, drop them in the comments section below and I’ll respond to them as soon as I can! Also, please check out Gyu Min’s Blog post as well:
also please check out our wonderful volunteer helpers, Indah Del Bianco and Myung Joon Cho’s blog posts!
And while you’re here, you might as well check out everyone else’s posts!
Have a lovely night!!

Love your video. Very entertaining and shows your progress very well. Great team work. What did you enjoy most about this project? Mulder
June 1, 2021 at 2:38 am
Thank you so much Ms. Mulder!! I would say the most fun part was just getting an excuse to go out more often and get some exercise, especially with all of this beautiful weather

Thank you emma!
June 1, 2021 at 2:24 am
WOW! I really know how to be a great volleyball player now from you guys. Immaculate form. With all the footage how many times do you think you hit the ball in that day?
June 1, 2021 at 2:43 am
THANK YOU!! we do try. well, we were filming from probably 8am to 12pm, so at least 500 times wouldn’t be an insane estimate

Super entertaining and well-edited video, Volleyball Brotherss! Haikyuu!! is a major inspiration for my love of volleyball too. You both did awesome! Especially with beach volleyball; that sand does NOT make it easy to jump. What is your favourite type of serve and favourite type of set? And if you were a position on a volleyball team, what would it be?
June 1, 2021 at 2:46 am
Thank you so much! Haikyuu is definitely a good motivator when motivation is lacking. I would have to agree, sand is not at all forgiving. I’d say my favourite type of serve would be just the old fashioned jump serve, and I like my sets on the higher side. As for a position on the volleyball team, just because of my height, though I’m really happy wherever, as long as I’m on the court!
June 1, 2021 at 2:58 am
Awesome! Jump serves are fun, no clue if I can still do one or not but they are great! You had really good form. Good luck on the rest of In-Depth!
June 1, 2021 at 2:28 am
EPIC video guys. Looks like you definitelly made a lot of progress and had a lot of fun. What was the hardest part of your process?
June 1, 2021 at 2:39 am
Much thanks π I would say the hardest part for me was definitely the workout bit at the beginning, it took the most suffering. However I think Gyu Min would argue that editing the video was more painful.
June 1, 2021 at 2:28 am
Great Job! The video was amazing!!
June 1, 2021 at 2:47 am
I’ve got a huge debt to Gyu Min for pulling through with this masterpiece. Thank you so much for commenting!
June 1, 2021 at 2:28 am
MJ best presenter, sure. But now best volleyball player? Things are started to heat up. But really, good job both of you.
June 1, 2021 at 2:47 am
hehehe thank you. and I dunno, Mel has a pretty good point, he’s getting pretty good. Might we see you on the court some time good sir?
June 1, 2021 at 2:51 am
That was a super entertaining video! What would you say is your biggest accomplishment in volleyball?
June 1, 2021 at 3:30 am
Thank you so much Simran! I would say my biggest accomplishment would have to be my setting! I went from barely being able to set to being pretty darn good if I do say so myself
June 1, 2021 at 3:25 am
This is so cool Devon! I loved watching the video/mini tutorial! π
June 1, 2021 at 3:31 am
Thank you so much!
June 1, 2021 at 3:34 am
You know, people don’t usually actually laugh when they write “LMAOO…”…but I did. LMAO. From the inspiration of this journey being Haikyuu to the Rocky music in the opener, this was a very enjoyable piece of work from a couple of very entertaining students. Devon, now I know where you got those arms from. This is fantastic!
June 3, 2021 at 4:52 pm
LOL thank you very much :)) Gyu Min kind of carried our video editing but absolutely anime inspired volleyball journey. These arms definitely came from some hard work :p Thanks for stopping by!
June 1, 2021 at 3:39 am
That video was so entertaining, great job guys!
June 3, 2021 at 4:53 pm
Thank you so much :))
June 1, 2021 at 3:43 am

June 3, 2021 at 4:54 pm
With much help from our amazing mentor! Thank you
June 1, 2021 at 4:29 am
Very snazzy video! That MJ guy seems like a really cool guy though. π
June 3, 2021 at 4:54 pm
Yeah he really is! Quite the natural volleyball player if I do say so myself
June 1, 2021 at 4:54 am
Oh now the secret is out! Loved the video & the music was the best! Well done showing how you βtaughtβ MJ to play! Super entertaining – maybe you should do drama, oh wait, you are! Awesome job guys!
June 3, 2021 at 4:55 pm
Thank you so much!! And yes I would agree, the video is a masterpiece
June 1, 2021 at 4:55 am
Epic video Devon! Very informative. I feel like I can be a volleyball god now after watching it π
June 3, 2021 at 4:55 pm
Thank you very much Mike, but I feel like you were already a volleyball god π
June 1, 2021 at 4:10 pm
Wowowow what a spectacular video! I would love to personally congratulate the editor; it looks like they spent so much time on this! Maybe too much…
Jokes aside, we did a great job Devon! Could not be happier with how everything turned out. Now play me 1v1 again.
June 3, 2021 at 4:57 pm
Yeah the video was pretty cool, thanks Gyu Min. We absolutely killed it out there and I’m very happy with how it ended up. Especially the last 1v1. And I would happily beat you again π
June 1, 2021 at 9:29 pm
I just realized that I watched and then forgot to leave a comment. I thank you for acknowledging that I have been telling you to give Volleyball a try. Glad you found another sport you love. I like the humour in the video while showcasing the skills gained through the process of learning the game really show. You both improved. Maybe MJ will join next year.
June 2, 2021 at 1:09 am
This is hilarious! I feel like you gave us a two for one deal…volleyball and comedy sketch! I love the idea of having a student play a role in this video…in this sense, it makes the skills you go through, accessible and inviting! Thanks for breaking down the skills in such an engaging manner!
