How do the different wavelengths of visible light affect the growth of mold?

Here is my final Ted Talk Presentation on how different coloured LED lights can affect the growth of mold.

  1. Informative and interesting! The answer to the question wasn’t what I expected, but that just made it all the more better. It’s very interesting to see the differences even within LED lights themselves – makes me wonder what LED lights I have in my own house.

Best of luck with your experiment in TALONS 10!

  2. Hey Indah!
Wonderful TED Talk! Your slides and voice-overs are super informative, and you really went into detail with each specific type of mold. Like Jerome, I’m now wondering what kind of LED lights I might have at home.

Why did you decide to learn about light affecting growth of mold?
    Thanks for sharing!

    TALONS alumna 2017-2019

    1. Thank you Kailey! I’m very glad you enjoyed the presentation. I’ve answered your question in response to Grace’s comment, so instead of me being repetitive, I’d recommend reading that for your answer 🙂

  3. Your presentation is amazing, Indah! I loved the way you started the TED talk; it definitely hooked me and kept me engaged throughout! I learned so much about the different types of mould! It was really difficult for me to think of constructive criticism, since everything was so well-done, but I would recommend considering adding a video of mould growth, since I think that would be an interesting way of making your powerpoint more interactive! Like Kailey, I’m wondering why you chose this particular topic. I’m now super excited to see your experiment next year!

    1. Thanks, Grace! I chose this topic because of the LED lights I have decorating my room. They got me thinking about what kind of properties they have that could possibly affect the growth of an organism that gets energy from light. I was originally going to do my experiment on plant growth, but since that has already been done too recently I settled on mould.

  4. Hi Indah!

I really enjoyed listening to your TED Talk! You explained the differences between Blue and Red LED lights very well. I found your TED Talk easy to understand and very engaging. Also, I really liked your use of diagrams in your presentation, as I could follow what you were saying way easier.

My only wish would be to explain more on LED lights and how they work. For example, Anode vs Cathode.

    Question:

Do blue LED lights dry out bread and impede growth?

    -Derek, TALONS 9

    1. Thanks, Derek! I really liked your presentation on other effects of visible light as well! To answer your question, LED lights actually run cooler than most lights and are often used in food storage units. So though it may provide heat to affect the growth of the mould, I would say it is unlikely for the bread to dry out because of it. Plus, during my experiment, I will be making sure to keep the bread consistently moist.

  5. Hello Indah!
Wow, your presentation was super incredible! I knew very little about both mold and LED lights before watching your presentation, and now I understand more about how LED lights will effect mold.
A star I have is that the images and text were helpful in understanding the concepts and improved the overall presentation. You also spoke very clearly and it was easy to follow along.
It was difficult finding a constructive criticism for your presentation, but I think that maybe adding a video in the presentation might increase our understanding a bit more. However, you presentation was really informative and interesting!
Here is my question: Will you be using the information that you learned in this project in the future? How?
What an amazing presentation! Thank you!
    -Emma

    1. Thank you, Emma! I will definitely be using the information from my experiment in the future. I have a bit of a mould problem in the showers of my bathroom, so my mom is hoping to take the information from my research to help her prevent mould from spreading in the bathrooms, haha. Thanks for the feedback!

  6. Very cool Indah! One thing I loved is how you were able to make the kind of unusual connection between light and mold. You also have a very nice narrator’s voice. You had lots of slides, at least to me, but they all flowed really well together. I have to ask though, is the heat the only factor in the growth?

    1. Thank you Nathan! Heat is not the only factor important to the growth of mould. Moisture is also very important, and mould will only grow in humid and wet conditions.

  7. You did a great job presenting! I loved your cadence and your speaking voice! My only criticism would be that you didn’t spend much time on what different materials head up more or less efficiently than others, but that’s just minor. My only question would be if you’re going to regulate the temperature in the experiment, and if so, how?

    1. Thanks Devon! Yes, I am planning to regulate the temperature in my experiment as much as possible. To be honest, I don’t know how I would do it yet, but that will be something I think about before I start. Thanks for the comment!

  8. Hi Indah, that was a great presentation. I learned a lot about mould and it was very concise and easy to follow. if I had one critique it would be that more visuals or pictures would’vee been nice, but besides that, it was an amazing in-depth presentation. Since mould grows better in blue lights, could pharmaceutical companies that mass produce mould for the creating of things like penicillin utilize this? And if so do you know if they are doing this already?

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Colby! I did some quick research to answer your question, and it doesn’t look like pharmaceutical companies use blue LEDs to boost the growth of mould. However, LED lights and UV lights are used to kill unwanted bacteria.

  9. Hello Indah!

I really had fun watching your presentation! It was very organised and engaging. I like how you used your diagrams and images to help explain your points. Also, I like how you used one font/color for your powerpoint. One question I have for you is: What encouraged you to choose your topic about how different wavelengths of visible light affect the growth of mold?

    Amin Lotfi

    1. Thanks Amin! I’m glad you enjoyed the presentation. I decided to choose this topic because I have LED lights in my room as decoration. Their vibrant light lead me to wonder what effects it had on light-absorbing organisms, like plants. However since something similar was done recently, I decided to change it up a bit and research the effects on mould instead. It’s a lot different than what I had in mind but very interesting to learn about!
