What I will be learning

I am learning how to Animate 3D objects in Maya.

Why I chose this skill

I chose animating in Maya because I’ve already tried playing around with 3D modeling. I first started playing around with Tinker cad which was a great starting ground and got me very interested in visual design. I then played around in Fusion 360 but instead preferred Blender where I improved my skills and then started playing around with animation. I wanted to pursue animation and take it on a more professional level. With the In-depth project it gave me the opportunity to get a mentor and learn Maya.

My goals

My goal is to be able to use Maya Autodesk by the end of the In-depth project. By that I mean I would like to be able to make short animations with movement, rotation, and size difference and some theory.

Mentor

I’ve been learning painting and drawing ever since I was young at Evelia Espinosa’s Art Studio. Though I recently stopped going due to covid-19. At Evelia Espinosa’s Art Studio Paola was a teacher that would teach and assist in teaching. Her job is making animations for movies, and projects. I asked her if she would be able to mentor and she happily accepted.

First Meetings

Our first meeting was quite the success and I enjoyed the structure.  We would go over the project and she would show me how to roughly do it and I’d ask here the questions I had. I would then complete the work/animation and upload it to Sync Sketch to get reviewed by Paola. She would go over and explain what was wrong and what I should to improve it. I would read her comments and would implement them. We would then meet and either go over it or start on a new project.

For our first project was learning about and how to use the Graph Editor in Maya Autodesk. We learn different ways that objects can move and the shape of the graph curve.

The Graph Editor

Some challenges I’ve had

I have noticed while animating that to get a more natural movement I have to tweak the curve in the Graph Editor. Though I would still get uneven timing and movement even if I try edit it. I hope as the meeting go I will be able to make the animations more natural.
