John Maxwell Blog Post Assignment

I found the John Maxwell videos very interesting as I could make connections between the Leadership traits that I saw in the videos and the traits that I experience during T.A.L.O.N.S. trip planning and other events. 

“Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time.” -M. Scott Peck, Page 18 

I chose this quote because in T.A.L.O.N.S. we often have lots of different projects that we have to work on at the same time. To me this quote describes that unless you value yourself, you won’t value the time that you have. I find it quite relevant to myself because sometimes I don’t do my work until the day before it is due. I do not understand the value in myself because I don’t value the time that I am given to work on projects. It will help me further my leadership skills because it helps me to make better use of my time so that I can get more work done in the same amount of time. This will be extremely relevant to the rest of my time in the T.A.L.O.N.S. program, especially after winter break, because of all the event planning we will be doing. If I am not taking the time to value myself and my own time, the time that I have to work on the projects will be wasted on other things. Therefore, I am going to embody this quote and not faff around until the day before the project is due, I will get started as soon as I get the project. I think that it will not only help me get my work done, but I will also have time to support my classmates in their work if they need help. 

“The Vision Challenge” -Page 14 

I found the vision challenge very interesting because during trip planning someone often comes up with a vision but sometimes, I find it hard to work with or accept the vision they came up with. That is why this is one challenge that I am going to refer to often because before I would experience it, but I didn’t know what it was and didn’t know how to work with it. One way I can learn to work with the vision is by placing the group’s needs first. This means that even if I think about doing something else, I should instead ask why we chose that option and learn to be understanding and accepting so I can be more involved with the group. Another way I can work with the vision is by understanding the role that I have to play. That means that if I am supposed to be making the route plan, I shouldn’t be trying find the best campsite; instead, I should focus on the role that I have to play and collaborate with the people who are planning the campsites so that the route is close to the campsites. I think that the vision challenge will be very useful when the trip planning starts because of all the different tasks that will have to be done for the trip planning to go ahead. 

“You do not lead by hitting people over the head – that’s assault, not leadership” -Dwight Eisenhower, Page 27 

I find this quote funny and useful at the same time because it says that if you are hitting people over the head (or telling them what to do) it’s not leadership. You are just forcing them to do what you want them to do. I find that this can be applied to T.A.L.O.N.S because if I am planning a trip and someone isn’t doing something right, and I go and tell them what they have to do, that is not leadership. Leadership is helping the person understand what they have to do in a positive way. You don’t get people doing what you would like them to do by forcing them to do it or telling them everything they are doing wrong and how they have to fix it. It will further advance my leadership skills because it reminds me that to get people to do something I would like them to do, I can’t force them to do it. It also tells me that leadership isn’t telling them what to do every minute they are doing a task, leadership is helping people to achieve their potential and assisting them when they get stuck on a task. I think that this idea is of the most relevancy to myself because I will have to do a lot of leadership work when the trip planning starts. 

 

To sum up my considerations of these three quotes, I think that a person who wants to display good leadership qualities has to have all of the above skills in order to be an effective leader in any situation.

Practice Interview Reflection

Eminent Person Practice Interview Reflection 

I think that doing the practice interview was important because it helped me to realize what parts of my interview skills I needed to work on. I was also able to learn from other’s interviews and improve my own interview skills. For example, one of my classmates had really good questions, spoke in a really clear and calm voice, and all the different parts in her interview flowed together and made the interview go smoothly without pauses. I could work on my skills by building off of some of the skills that they used in their interview. When I did my interview, the conversation didn’t flow very well, and I didn’t have good transitions from one of my questions to the next. This made my interview sound very jerky because the first questions that I asked had simple answers and then the next question I asked had a very detailed answer. If I were to do my interview again, I would make sure that I had a good transition between my closed questions and my open questions so that it would be like a piece of music where it grows in intensity instead of going from a piano to a fortissimo in one quarter note. If I tried to go from a piano to a fortissimo in one quarter note it would be super soft and then would be so strong it wouldn’t fit together. That is why I need to make sure that the transitions between questions in my interview make sense and don’t jump around otherwise it will sound like I don’t know what I am doing.  

Another thing that I need to work on is speaking in a clear and calm voice because I ended up speeding up my words and then it is really hard to have a proper conversation. I also start talking with more intensity in my voice, so it makes it seem that I am stressed or rushed and then it makes me seem unprofessional. 

To conclude, I need to work on making my questions fit together and speaking in a clear and calm voice so that I am easy to understand, and my interviewee doesn’t have trouble understanding any of my questions. 

Introduction To My Eminent Person

Sir Ludwig Guttmann 

“It occurred to me that it would have been a serious omission not to have included sport in the rehabilitation of handicapped people. That was probably one of the best thoughts I have ever had as a medical man.” 

Personal Connections 

I chose to research Sir Ludwig Guttmann for my first Eminent Person Project. What drew me to Sir Ludwig Guttmann is the strong connection I have to Para-rowing. I have met and been inspired by several Para-rowers. If the Paralympics didn’t exist, then there wouldn’t be a place for para-athletes to compete at the same level as the Olympic Games. If not for Sir Ludwig’s work, there wouldn’t be the Paralympic sports that has changed the way we look at people with disabilities. 

Sir Guttman came to England just before the start of the second World War with little knowledge of the English language. It was difficult for him to translate and share his knowledge with his peers and superiors. I could relate to this in a way; I have also had challenges in sharing my knowledge because I struggle to take what I am thinking about and what I understand and put it on paper or in writing.  

I also share with him the view that sport is very important and helps to bring people together. I believe that there should be more opportunities for everyone to participate in sport, especially those with disabilities – whether mental or physical disabilities.  

A quality that Sir Ludwig and I share is that we have good attention to detail. He would check in on all his patients during the night to make sure that they were rolled to keep them safe from deadly pressure sores. When I referee soccer, I make sure that all the players have shin pads on, their socks are covering their shin pads, and that they don’t have metal studs on their cleats. 

What has been missing for me in other classes is having a team to work with, people who I can connect with and understand that there are different ways of learning and solving a problem. Dr. Guttman was alone in his view at first and then found – or maybe better said built – a community of like-minded people to accomplish goals together. 

One thing that is different and I have to work to understand about Dr. Guttman is his Jewish faith, his experience in Nazi Germany and how he always felt like a refugee in England. At the end of his life, he was quoted as saying that he never stopped feeling like a refugee and never truly felt English; British yes, but never totally accepted in England. I’ve been lucky to grow up in Canada and never experience anything like that.  

Eminence 

He made new principles that changed how patients were treated and the quality of care that they received; in turn, their life expectancy improved, and he used the power of sport to improve their mental and physical well-being. So, Dr. Guttman founded the Stoke-Mandeville Games. After injury Guttmann focused an individual’s mind on what they can do rather than regretting what they can no longer do. Through sport Guttmann gave that person back the will to live a full life with pride and self-respect. 

I think that he will always be remembered because of the Paralympics, even though most people, (including me until I started the Eminent Person Project), don’t know who he is and what he did. But we all know about the Paralympics and that means that Sir Ludwig Guttmann’s legacy will continue to positively impact our world. 

Some of the challenges that Sir Ludwig experienced during his rise to eminence include: having to escape from the Nazis and start a new life for his family in England; taking care of all patients, regardless of religion or nationality because he saw the person first; he wasn’t supposed to be because he was Jewish and German, so he was only supposed to treat Jewish patients. 

Sir Ludwig Guttmann is worth researching because I enjoy watching the Olympics and the Paralympics, but I didn’t know who created the Paralympics. I now see how important it is for people with disabilities to be able to live side by side with able-bodied people and do anything an able-bodied person could do. 

I chose Sir Ludwig Guttmann because I have seen firsthand what athletes with a disability can do and how exciting it is to watch them compete. He was the first person to help people with disabilities participate in sport as a means to rejoin society after devasting injuries. His small start with the Stoke-Mandeville Games has become an international movement, and now the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games are held every four years.

Another good resource about Para-athletes is the Netflix Movie “Rising Phoenix” which is all about Para-athletes and their trip to the Paralympics. It would be good to watch as the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic games are coming up soon.

Digital Footprint Assignment

1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

If you post something that is offensive or makes fun of ethnic groups, employers won’t want to hire you.

And if you post things on social media making fun of someone without their consent, employers won’t want to hire you because you could do the same thing to someone in the company.

2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

Ask yourself if you would be okay if your parents, teachers, and friends saw it.

Don’t post your last name, address or any other personal information.

And ask yourself if it’s appropriate, does it make fun of anyone, and is it harmful?

3. If you could go back in time, is there anything that you would do differently online? Think of what advice you would pass on to your younger self or other students.

Don’t be in a rush to get Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat. Just be your self.

Training Post

2) Body – This is where you place your content of the post – text, videos, pictures, etc. Follow the instructions on the Digital Footprint Assignment page to see what questions you need to answer here.

3) Tool Bar – In your toolbar you can “Add Media” and “Add Documents” into your posts, this is the best way to create visual representations. You can also change fonts, hyperlink, etc.

4) Publish – Here is where you control what items are public and private. You can also control when they are published to your website.

5) Categories – Here is where you choose where you want your post to go. This is your digital binder with all of your subjects. Make sure to categorize each post with the relevant subject. E.g. Categories -> English

6) Tags –  Here is where you tag posts with one or two of the most readily applicable Core Competencies. These tags can help you find things quicker on your blog and help you stay organised. E.g. Tag -> creativethinking

7) Publish – When you are done, simply “Publish” it. If it has been edited, press “Republish” to update with the latest version of the content.
