“Some people say that [my works] are surrealist drawings. But I think, that I’m a realistic illustrator of our time… our surrealist time.” -P.K.

Born in 1976, in Szczecin, Poland, I grew up during my country’s communist rule. I am a visual artist who uses watercolours and pencils as a vessel for social commentary. By spotlighting modern day issues in our world, I hope to incite thought-provoking conversations. Over the years I’ve contributed to the use of art in social, economic, and political movements, andΒ have won over 140 prizes and distinctions (one of particular note being the β€œEryk” prize from the Association of Polish Cartoonists). Lately I’ve been exploring some different art styles by taking on the persona of “Mel”, a random person. This following piece was created digitally…

That’s all for today. But before you go, what are your interpretations of my art? How do certain paintings make you feel? I’d love to discuss this in the comments below.

Have a good evening!

  1. Mel! I really like the approach. Mel as Pawel? Pawel as Mel? Does life imitate art? Or does art imitate life?? Simple, deep, rich and pleasing presentation. Well done Pawel, or, you’re gonna like this — Pa-mel?? Eh, eh??? Okay, le sigh. Sad attempt.

  2. Awesome learning centre Lara!! I learned so much about you and your life that I had no idea about before and am so inspired by the constant resilience and strength you have shown throughout your lifetime! Wonderful job! πŸ™‚

    1. Oh my goodness I am so sorry!!! I do not know how that happened!! Here is the comment I actually meant to sent to you!!

Amazing learning centre!! I love your style of art and the messages you are conveying! Beautiful! My favourite is the one with the plastic bag in the shape of a skull! It is so meaningful and provokes so much thought yet it is so simple. Thank you for sharing your story! One question I had is what was the most challenging part of your career?

      1. No worries! thank you so much for your comment!

To answer your question, while there have been various struggles throughout my career, the most challenging part of my career has been (and continues to be sometimes), finding satisfaction in my work, and being content with the world despite its faults. If I can make people think about the issues we often overlook, I will have lived a good life.

  3. What an impressive learning centre! I learned a whole lot. I was introduced to a lot of art that’s new to me. Overall a really intriguing learning centre, thank you for teaching me so much.

  4. Great selection of commentaries on the world and its state(s). Mel’s piece is intriguing, too. Trees versus people. Trees as people. Or, is it the other way around?

    1. That’s a very interesting interpretation, one I hadn’t thought of before!
Trees (nature) is definitely part of the message I’m trying to convey, but I tried to approach it through a “mechanical” lens. I didn’t use actual human figures, but mechanical representations (robot-like), as a way of juxtaposing human nature with human creation. I tried to show how these two things often “mirror” each other.

  5. wow! all the art and message seemed very meaningful! I really enjoyed reading and going through your blog! the colors and meaning all just went together amazingly! good job β˜†*:.q.o(≧▽≦)o.q.:*β˜†

  6. All the art looks amazing! It all looks like they have stories and meaning behind them. The colours and values that pop out really draw my attention to them.

  7. Really cool drawings! I love the messages that you convey in each piece. What is your favourite medium for creating your art?

    1. Thank you!
My go to approach for my art involves more of a mixed media element. First I go in with watercolour paint to getting the general colours down, and then I add coloured pencils to get the details right.

  8. Wow!! Your art is so cool!! Additionally, that “random artist” Mel’s contribution isn’t too shabby either πŸ™‚ What would you say your favourite piece is?

    1. Great question!
While many of my pieces are forms of social satirical commentary, my favourite piece doesn’t have much of a social message. It is the second to last one with rain coming down onto a couple of umbrellas, signifying the drumming sound we associate with rain. It was a marvellously fun piece to play with and I think it turned out well.
