In-Depth Night

Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your evening so far.

My name is Simran and for my In-Depth project this year, I chose to learn the basics of watercolour painting. Prior to this project, I did not have any knowledge about watercolour painting but through this experience, I have gained a basic understanding of various skills and techniques. Thank you to my watercolour partner Amin for helping me throughout In-Depth. I would also like to say a huge thank you to my mentor Nina as I have learned a lot from her, and without her support, I would not have been able to gain as much knowledge as I did.

For my final presentation, I have put together a PowerPoint of some of the paintings I created and descriptions for each one to highlight some of the skills I learned.

Here is the link to the presentation:

Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions or comments regarding my In-Depth journey. I will be replying to them as soon as possible. Thank you for visiting my post and I hope you have a great rest of your evening!

  1. This is incredible, you’re so talented! Had you learned any other styles of art prior to this project (painting, drawing, etc)? Great work!

    1. Thank you Makenzie! I have done some drawing prior to this project but it was a hobby I did in my free time. Painting was something new because I’ve always wanted to learn but never really had the opportunity to pursue so that’s why I decided to do watercolour as my In-Depth. :))

  2. All of these are really good! I especially like cloudy skies one, the clouds look really nice!

  3. Hi,

I am wondering where you got you ideas of what to paint? Have you ever tried painting scenery around you?

    1. I looked at some photos online and my own photos to gain inspiration! I have tried painting scenery around me a few times but it is definitely something that I would like to experiment with more.

  4. I love “Falling Into Autumn”!!!!
the colors are so nice to look at, and the composition is stunning!

    1. Thank you so much! I recall your last name and I think you taught me for “challenge” at Birchland Elementary. It’s been quite a while!

  5. I love your paintings Simran! They’re so beautiful! And the one about hotdogs and sandwiches was very creative πŸ™‚

  6. Hi Simran, I loved the painting “Falling into Autumn”- the colors were so warm and the light was amazing. Well done!

    1. Thanks so much! I would have to agree that “Falling into Autumn” was one of my favourites and I enjoyed painting it.

  7. Amazing watercolour paintings! Watercolour can be tricky to work with given its nature, and we see that you have a talent for it. We hope you keep painting! – Natalie and Brandon

  8. Beautiful work, Simran. I really liked your commentary about your pieces as well. It is more like we were at a live event.

  9. Hey Simran!
I really like your art pieces! Each one has a different feeling attached to it…it’s hard to explain with words. My favorite is “Falling Into Autumn”. I like that you used a warm-colored theme for that painting.

What are some tips you have for beginners? Is there anything I should avoid doing when creating watercolor pieces for the first time?

Thanks! I hope you keep painting, you’re quite talented!

    1. Thank you Kailey! I’m flattered. A tip for anyone that is just getting into watercolour painting is to invest in watercolour paper because regular copy paper is very thin and will start to pill and tear. Taping down your paper is very useful because it not only keeps it in place but also created a nice border for your painting. Another point to add is that white is not used in watercolour painting. You can also use negative space in your paintings effectively. For example, creating highlights.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that practice makes progress ! Just like any other skill, you aren’t going to be perfect the first time so persevering through your struggles is key.

  10. Your paintings are awesome for someone who just got started in this art form. I love the powerpoint with gallery theme. Very smart choice. Which is your favorite painting and why?

    1. Thank you for your kind words Ms. Mulder! My favourite painting would be “Falling into Autumn,” because there were multiple layers to paint and it showcases skills I learned such as blending and mixing colours.

  11. Simran,

I didn’t have access to your PowerPoint, but from the other comments, it sounds like they were lovely. I most enjoyed reading about how you overcame your challenges (like no paper), by finding alternatives and being innovative!

    1. Thank you for visiting my post! There were definitely some challenges along the way but overcoming obstacles is all a part of the journey. Enjoy the rest of your evening!
