Gyu Min’s In-Depth Blog Post Finale: The Journey Through Hip-Hop Dancing!

How is everyone doing tonight? Did you come to this post because I had a catchy image? Even the photo is urging you to click! I hope anyone who has spent their thoughtful time to look through our posts and have online conversations with us through the comments has been enjoying the process so far, experiencing the hard work and exuberating passion of 56 unique In-Depth projects. If you so happened to come across my unique and special post, let me welcome you in with a smile!

Hi! My name is Gyu Min Jang, and I’m a grade 9 TALONS learner at Gleneagle. Welcome to the showcase of my In-Depth Project! Well, maybe “show” is the better term, because my project partner, Indah, my mentor, Kailey, and I will all be taking you through our 5-month process in hip-hop dancing, that comes together in one final dance show performance by the end!

Simply put, my friend and classmate Indah Del Bianco, as well as myself, decided we wanted to learn hip-hop dancing as our In-Depth project for grade 9. I was always passionate about dancing and the simple fact that I could move my body in sync to look so cool (haha), and I wanted to see if I could try it myself. To help us with our goal, our good friend and experienced dancer Kailey Huang took on the role of a mentor during the project. All in all, the experiences I shared during my time with this project will be unforgettable, and I hope you will be able to see the journey that I went on as clearly as I did. So without further adieu, here is our In-Depth project (Kindly edited by Indah):

  1. You guys did a very good job making it seem like you were dancing right next to each other. Great work!

    1. Thank you so much! The filming process to get everything to match took a while, but it definitely paid off by the end.

  2. Hey Gyu Min!!
My wonderful mentee and friend – congratulations on your first in-depth project! I know I’ve said this before, but I’m truly grateful that you and Indah asked me to be your mentor. This was as much a learning experience for me as it was for you. You both improved so much! I hope you keep on dancing!

What are some things in terms of technique or stage presence that you wish to work on in the future?

It was wonderful being able to work alongside you and see your progress. Great job!
    Kailey

    1. Hello my wonderful and amazing mentor Kailey!!!
Thank you so much for the supportive comments, as well as for the 5 months you spent with me and Indah, taking us from terrible beginner dancers to less terrible intermediate dancers! What an improvement πŸ™‚ In terms of your question, I hope to venture my way into popping and locking dancing, as that is the type of hip-hop dance that I am most passionate about. This is going to be much more technical in terms of how my body acts and moves as a whole, and I am curious to see how far I can take my experiences from In-Depth in my next endeavors.

  3. Wow it looks like it took a lot of practice to get that good! Have either of you had any previous dance experience in other genres?

    1. Thank you so much, Glen! Yeah, it was definitely a long and hard journey to get to where we were by the end product, but I think it paid off extremely well! Indah was quite comfortable with dancing already because of her experiences in musical theatre but never tried anything in the hip hop genre. As for me, I’ve always been passionate about dancing but had 0 experience before this project! Pretty cool to see where I’ve come now.

  4. I didn’t know you could dance! Looks like you had a lot of fun with the project as well.

    1. I didn’t know I could dance either! But it was thanks to In-Depth that I had the chance to try something out of my comfort zone. Not too shabby for a beginner, right? I can’t wait to see what ideas you might have next year Draedon!

  5. It looks like you had so much fun. That was cool that you could do your In-Depth with a partner. Keep dancing!

    1. Thank you so much! The whole project was a joyous process, and the progress I made was even more fun to enjoy with a partner!

    1. Thank you so much, Grace! The outfit change was pretty snazzy in my opinion as well πŸ˜€

    1. My new favorite word: Spiffy. Thank you so much for the comment Joanna! Glad you enjoyed it.

  6. Very enjoyable! Although your final project was well done and you rocked the moves (old people speak), I loved your documentation of your journey even more. Well done!!

    1. Thank you so much Angie! I definitely agree with you; it’s not about the destination, but the journey. And Indah and I had one heck of a journey! I’m glad you enjoy watching it!

    1. First step: Find a grassy area. Second step: Jump and flip. I’m still working on the 2nd step, Colby. But it will be a reality eventually. Thanks for watching!

  7. Indah and Gyu Min, I know if we were all watching in the auditorium, the whole room would burst into applause watching your hip hop performance. So awesome!

    1. Hearing that comment is just as good as the real thing, I must say! Thank you so much for enjoying our video and commenting! I hope we do have the chance to take our performance live at some point. In-Depth 2021?

  8. Holy mushrooms – your performance is amazing! As a beginner who didn’t have much experience with dance, did your perspective of dance shift significantly throughout the process? After trying out two different styles of dance in your video, which one did you prefer, and what styles of dance do you want to try in the future (if you decide to continue dance)?

    1. Thank you so much Grace! I’m glad you enjoyed it πŸ™‚ Starting out on this project as a complete beginner of a dancer and ending it with a much deeper understanding of the art form by performing a full-fledged routine, I do think my perspective of dance shifted immensely from my new knowledge and practice in these past 5 months. Specifically, I think people tend to underestimate how tiring dancing really is, and how immersed and connected your entire body has to be for most moves, not just a single limb. As for your second question, the overarching tree of hip-hop is surprisingly a lot bigger than most people think, and there are many more styles that I could take my dancing in the future. I want to continue to pursue my passion in the path of popping and locking dance though because as much as I think the big dynamic moves you saw in the latter part of our dance is extremely cool, I want to now hone my focus into smaller and more distinct movements through the study of pop and lock dance. I hope this answers your questions; please enjoy the rest of the night!

      1. Thanks for a very thorough answer! Pop and lock is so cool – it’s awesome that you’re charging ahead in exploring the realm of dance. Make sure you take some time to celebrate the completion of your project! :))

  9. Hi,

I love how you used the TALONS colours for your clothing! How do you think your experience of in depth was different since you had a partner?

    1. Thank you so much for the comment! I feel the attention to our clothing and background were liked by many others along with yourself, as Indah and I tried to tie our dance in with Gleneagle and the TALONS program as best as we could. Working with Indah was definitely nothing but positive experiences for me, as we were able to share our progress easily, and overall have a more enjoyable time with the project simply as friends taking on a new hobby. I feel like this perspective of the project greatly increased my enjoyment as well as my drive to continue to practice each week.

  10. You’ve got groove Gyu Min! You should showcase some of that talent in vocal jazz… Do I see a dance solo in the future?

    1. Haha, Thank you so much Jewel! And to answer your question, do I see a vocal pop group in the future?

  11. So well done & so entertaining! Loved the process video – great to see all the hard work & progress. It was amazing to watch the final video. Hope you both keep dancing!

    1. Thank you so much for the comment, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Indah and I wanted to capture as many moments as we could during the process, so we could look back and see how much we really did improve. The dancing won’t be stopping anytime soon!

  12. That was really well done – it looks like you both had a lot of fun doing this project! Loved the use of different music and costumes! – Natalie and Brandon

    1. Thank you so much Natalie and Brandon! I hope our positivity and passion really showed in our progress video, we had a blast these past few months! Thank you for enjoying πŸ™‚

  13. OMG, I remember when I had the same topic during my grade 10 year! And let me tell you, yours was MUCH better!

    1. Haha, thanks so much Elyssa! I’m glad you enjoyed our process, but I hope you had one with just as many fond memories as well!

  14. This is awesome Gyu Min!!! I was VIBING so hard. It looks like you put a ton of time and effort into your final dance with Indah and I love the collaborative aspect too.

  15. This is such a cool project! Have you tried any other styles of dance? If so, what has been your favourite? What’s one style you have never tried but that you really want to? Great work!

  16. Well done, both of you! You worked hard despite the quarantine challenges and the end result looks amazing!
