TALON Talk 2021

Welcome to my TALON Talk where I answer the question:          “How does the pH of soil affect the colour of hydrangeas?”

My TALON Talk is in the form of a Prezi video. Enjoy!

  1. Hey Ah-Ra! I loved your talk, it was interesting to learn about hydrangeas and how they can change colours. Your Prezi’s illustrations and text made the talk easy to follow. I am wondering though, since you mentioned that scientists have learned a new way of changing a hydrangea’s colour in just a few days, do you know how the procedure would work? Great job again!

    • Hi Mandy! Thank you so much! I actually do know how the procedure would work as I’ve watched a video on it. I actually think I may be able to use it for my grade 10 science experiment as it takes less time to conduct. I’m not sure of the exact details, but here’s a video you can watch about it. https://youtu.be/WVAnvTjbmSE

  2. Hi Ah-Ra,

I really enjoyed learning about your topic. I regret to say that I have never found too much interest in plants, but your presentation quickly grasped my attention – what these hydrangeas do (their response to acidity) and what their “actions” result in is, as you stated, “incredible!” Your use of Prezi was a very nice touch and demonstrated a clear structure and flow (the aesthetics where eye-catching, too). One suggestion would be: Since there are some instances where your voice breaks off, maybe you could’ve recorded multiple clips and then strung them together? Or replaced specific segments?

My question is: Do you know of any other plants that change colour? Are their reasons for doing this similar to that of hydrangeas?

    Edward

    • Hello Edward! Thanks so much! Thank you for the suggestion as well; I’ll definitely try doing that next time. That’s a really good question, but I’m not actually quite sure. I do know of flowers that change colours according to time of day, and I also know that carnations can change colours if you drop food colouring on them, but I’m pretty sure that the reason they change colour and how they do isn’t similar to the hydrangeas.

  3. I loved your presentation Ahra! Your powerpoint was very well organized and easy to follow. You spoke very clearly and your visuals were very engaging. My only question is: Do you know of any evolutionary benefits of changing colour how they do and why do you think this process occurs?

  4. Happy new year Ar-ah! Amazing Talon Talk, it was really interesting and well organized. tour presentation was clear and you had a thoro understanding of your topic. What made you choose this topic?

  5. Hi Ahra! I really enjoyed your Ted Talk, it was interesting to learn about hydrangeas. Your presentation was organized well and it was easy to follow. My questions is when the hydrangeas change colour, do they get benefited by any sort? Good job again!
