Digital Footprint Assignment

1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

Whatever you put on the internet never really goes away. This means if you post any kind of media that is disrespectful or inappropriate, that would most likely affect your future persona in a negative way. Job employers and universities will want to look at your digital footprint to get a feel of what kind of employe or student you are. Which means that if your posts reflect a type of person unqualified, any future opportunities can be at risk.

2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

  1. Limit the data you share on social media. Everything you do on there will leave a footprint, so be aware of what you post and how it may reflect you.
  2. Avoid unsafe websites. Safe website URLs should start with https:// ; the ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’, meaning that it has a security certificate. Additionally, never share any personal or security information on unsafe websites.
  3. Be conscious of what you say online and how that could affect someone else or yourself in the future.
  4. Lastly, make strong passwords. Use upper and lowercase letters, symbols and numbers make it harder to access.

3. If you could go back in time, is there anything that you would do differently online? Think of what advice you would pass on to your younger self or other students.

I think I’d tell my past-self to avoid looking up free movies online, because they often lead to unsafe websites that can give your device a virus. Talking from experience.
