Digital Footprint Assignment

1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

A positive impact my digital footprint may have on my future opportunities is: If I’ve only posted and contributed to communities positively and only when necessary, future employers may be more likely to consider me, thinking that I would treat other people at the place I want to work the same way. However, the opposite is also true – if I have a negative digital footprint, employers would be less likely to hire me too.

2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

Three strategies are, 1), never giving out personal information such as location, full name, etc., 2), using the “THINK” acronym to determine whether I should post in the first place, and 3), find positive communities I could contribute to (that I am interested in) to create a positive digital footprint.

3. If you could go back in time, is there anything that you would do differently online? Think of what advice you would pass on to your younger self or other students.

As I have virtually no digital footprint in the first place – I have very few social media accounts and I am rarely active – there is nothing I would do differently online. A piece of advice I would give myself would be simply to spend less time overall on social media, whether it is chatting with classmates or aimlessly browsing the web, as these generally don’t benefit me in any way and are a form of procrastination.
