Digital Literacy #2 – Science Poster

Digital Literacy – Science Reproduction Poster

For this assignment, we were tasked with making a poster explaining the reproduction cycle of a living organism. The organism I was studying was the Purple Starfish (Pisaster Ochracues). Here is the final poster I made.

  1. I design my work with consideration given to aesthetics and design, such as consistent colour schemes, symmetry or organization of visual elements, and overall layout

For this assignment, I used photoshop to make my poster. I designed it with consideration to the aesthetics and design, trying to make it look good, while still retaining high amounts of information on the purple starfish.  I had it visually organized with arrows guiding the viewer to each stage in the cycle, but the clockwise rotation did make it slightly awkward as the cycle wasn’t a complete circle. I used a black and white colour scheme, for the most part, to make it look professional, but I used coloured images to highlight the look of the organism.

2. I determine and use the most effective medium to present my work

For this assignment, we had the opportunity to choose whether we used computers to make it, or made it by hand. I  used photoshop to create a digital image to present my work as I determined it was the most effective way to do so. This is because I could cram as much information into a small space, with room for customization or change if needed. It allowed me to make mistakes without much consequence as I could easily fix the mistake. I was also able to make the image look clean and professional, which I wouldn’t have been able to do if it was done by hand.

3. I challenge myself to increase my technological literacy by working with apps, software, or mediums that I have not used in the past

For this assignment, I challenged myself to increase my technological literacy. I demonstrated this by using photoshop to create the poster. Though I have used photoshop before, most of my use was personal, and I never really used it for school work. I challenged myself to use photoshop for this assignment with the hope that I would become more comfortable using photoshop for assignments in the future. Since this assignment, I have used photoshop amongst other programs a number of times to complete assignments for school, so I think it worked.
