Christine Sinclair

“When I was growing up, you didn’t know there was a women’s national team. Now girls grow up dreaming of playing for Canada.” -Christine Sinclair.

Christine Sinclair is a professional soccer player and a champion that speaks out for women’s rights. I am inspired and drawn to her because of what she stands for and how she has changed the sports world to benefit young girls. We share many qualities, passions and similarities including being born in Burnaby, supporting equal opportunities for girls and youth, valuing family, and we both have a passion for soccer. Christine Sinclair is always setting new goals, whether they are towards her soccer career, or our society in equalizing rights between all genders. As a result, she has contributed so much to her career in soccer and continues to create better opportunities for young girls. Furthermore, as a TALONS student and a soccer player, I expect great results from my goals and work hard for them, so I believe I relate to her in this way. As the quote says, when she was young, no one had heard about the women’s national soccer team. Only the men’s team was invested in and watched. Christine grew up watching men’s soccer as women’s soccer wasn’t acknowledged in the same way. The Canadian national women’s team wasn’t created until 1986, 3 years after Sinclair was born. But Christine was one that changed women’s soccer and fought to bring more attention to it. I think Christine Sinclair will be remembered for more than 20 years in Canada because she has changed women’s soccer, and sport in general, for the better. She will be remembered for the impact she has made on young girls especially. Her work on creating a better future and greater deal of respect towards women has been inspiring and uplifting. What she really wants in the world is for equally achievable opportunities for all genders and encouraging young girls to play in sport. Christine is worth remembering because she is Canada’s greatest female soccer player ever. She has won several awards, including Canada’s greatest female soccer player of the year ten times in a row, was named Canada’s greatest female soccer player of the decade in 2019, and holds the most international goals scored in the world. To add, she is not only a role model for her soccer achievements but believes that we can achieve equal authority between all genders. The main takeaway I would like people to remember, is the type of person she is as a leader. She doesn’t just hope for things to change but she has the determination and bravery to create change herself. She has done this through her soccer career and speaking out in general. She should be remembered for years for what she has contributed to her field, and I will always be thankful for what she has done to better my opportunities, and those of others, in the future.

A goal I have to further my research on Christine Sinclair’s, would be to learn more about her personality and personal life. I feel like I know a lot about how the world knows and views her, but it would help me to go more in depth with my research to look into her personal life.
