What is In-Depth?

In-Depth is a project where you choose a topic to learn about in depth, with a mentor to help you along the way!

What did I choose for my topic and why?

I chose American Sign Language (or ASL) to learn about because it’s really interested me for a long time, and I want to be able to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing people in a more effective and respectful manner!     1. Thanks! I think a big challenge for me was spreading out my practicing throughout the week instead of leaving a lot for the end. I often found myself putting off practicing when I was busy with other stuff, but I tried to stop that habit because it affected the quality of my learning!

I’m interested in your big takeaways about ASL..aside from the signs, what did you learn that you had no idea about regarding deaf culture of the many facets of ASL communication? What drew you to this topic and do you plan to continue? Thanks!

    1. Hi Ms. Quach!

      I learned a LOT of stuff I’d never really thought about before during this project. For example, poetry in ASL! In the documentary I watched, there was a part where someone recited a poem in ASL. They basically just signed some basic words, like “water” and “night”, but the hand motions flowed so smoothly and poetically, and even if you didn’t know the signs you could still follow along. Basically, just a lot of little things that are very cool but might not have crossed your mind before! 🙂
      I hope to continue learning ASL, but at the very least keep practicing the signs I know so I don’t forget them.
