In-Depth Post #4

Because of all the issues happening around the world right now, my in-depth project has been slowing down a bit in progress. I have more time to practice now though, so I have been working on refining the skills that I have already learned. Before the break, my Mentor and I agreed to pause meetings for two weeks because of what has been going on, so I haven’t met with him recently. I quickly video called with him the other day for a short period of time to test it out. We have planned to do another video call this week to work on new skills.

My in-depth proejct so far has been really enjoyable and while I haven’t been fully on track with recording progress, I compiled a few videos over the past 2 months of my practicing at home. Some of them are  quite spread apart and others are qutie close together. Most of them are short clips of practice. My left hand still needs a lot of work, but a lot of the tricks I have been practicing are much smoother now. The last video is a short improvised performance I tried. I apologize for the framing. Next month I’m going to properly choreograph a peformance and record it.

I want to create more poi, so I think I will make a set out of materials I can find around the house instead of ordering pieces to make it. I will still use the rope I bought before for it, but who knows what I’ll find to create them. I also want to learn some contact poi tricks on my own time, since my mentor mainly does poi spinning without contact poi.

Questions:

1. What has been my most difficult mentoring challenge so far?  Why?

With my mentor, the most challenging part is right now, due to COVID-19 and other problems in my life. It’s a lot harder to learn without my mentor being physically there. The video call I did works, but I found it easier to be able to walk around my mentor while he demonstrates different tricks. It helps me see every angle of the skill.

2. What is working well? Why?

We have been meeting consistently (except for Spring Break, and because of COVID-19) every week and have given enough time to practice. He has been teaching me very well and I’ve learned a lot over the past few months. My mentor has been an excellent instructor and is really good at figuring out how to fix what I do wrong.

3. What could be working better?  How can you make sure this happens?

The only thing that I think could be working better is allocating a little bit more time to practice or starting earlier to practice, because the time passes really quickly. This isn’t something that is working bad really, but I feel like I should spend more time practicing. To make sure this happens, I’ll contact my mentor about extending the time and also set a more consistent schedule for myself to practice poi.

Excellent progress report. Your Youtube poi practice video is very informative. You can see your improvement over time. At about minute five you started adding lower body movements. Before too long you will be adding more dance movements, showing an entire body work out. Great way to stay physically active during this pandemic. I would schedule in-depth like any other subject during remote education. Period one for in-depth or add a period six for in-depth!
