Volleyball

What skill have you chosen to learn?

My name is Devon Brooks, and this year I have chosen to learn how to play the sport of Volleyball, both in the respect of physically performing the six main volleyballs of Serving, Spiking, Setting, Passing, Digging, and Blocking, as well as the Regulations behind the sport. The end goal is to have an “in depth” understanding of both aspects. I have chosen to partner up with Gyu-min Jang in order to maximize my learning in this experience.

Why?

Volleyball is a sport that appeals to me, mainly due to the combination of different requirements. To play it, you need full body fitness; upper body for hitting and lower for jumping. Spatial awareness and problem solving skills are a necessity, paired with quick thinking, in order to be able to block, spike through blocks, dig up hard shots, and set nicely for the spiker. Balance is absolutely essential in every facet of the sport. A good understanding of its rules doesn’t hurt either. It was because of this nice combination of physical and mental abilities that really intrigued me. I was already part of the Volleyball team at Glen, so In Depth is a nice opportunity to continue that.

How are you going to learn this skill?

I am going to learn this skill through through careful practice, completion of drills, research of the rules, and guidance from my mentor.

What can others do to help you?

Encouragement and support is all I can really ask for, since not many people in my life are well versed in the rules and training techniques of Volleyball.

Progress Report:

My shared mentor with Gyu-min is Mr. Salisbury. Over the break, Mr. Salisbury recommended Gyu-min and I work on any weaknesses we have in the technical skills of the game, and so he gave Gyu-min and I each drills we could do solitarily to improve. Personally, I struggle slightly with setting, and so Mr. Salisbury provided me with accuracy drills for that. I’m somewhat frustrated I can’t do anything about the fact that I have to practice solo until restrictions are lifting, but there’s not a lot I can do to administer vaccines extremely quickly, so patience will have to be key. In the meantime, modifications have been made so we can each practice individually, and still hone our skills. I have also studied the rules a little bit, as well as boosting my physical fitness by enrolling in a 30-day exercise challenge.
